Meet Our Hero: Justin Grant

Justin GrantChild’s condition: Rhabdomyosarcoma (Cancer)
Age: 5

At the age of five, Justin is facing a battle no boy his age should ever have to – cancer. Diagnosed in October 2008, Justin has Rhabdomyosarcoma, a fast-growing, highly malignant tumor most often seen in children.

His first symptoms began in July 2008. He experienced ear pain and began to vomit frequently. Doctors suspected that Justin had an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics but his pain only intensified.

Tracy, Justin’s mom was extremely concerned. In 2007, Tracy lost her husband, Justin’s dad, very suddenly. The cause of his death was not discovered and there had been similar cases of tragedy in her husband’s side of the family. Soon after this occurred, Tracy scheduled an MRI for Justin at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). She wanted to ensure Justin was healthy now and into the future.

The MRI was originally booked in 2007 and was to occur in 2008. When SickKids staff called to confirm the appointment, Tracy informed them of Justin’s current symptoms. A nurse immediately took the call and told her to proceed straight to SickKids Emergency Department.

Once here, an x-ray and CT scan was performed and both showed the same result – Justin had a mass growing within his head.

Justin was admitted into SickKids care and further tests were run. Tracy was overwhelmed and scared. She was in shock when they delivered the biopsy result – cancer. Because Rhabdomyosarcoma is a very aggressive cancer, treatment began immediately.

Justin’s cancer started in his ear and quickly grew into the base of his skull and jawline, as a result he has some vocal paralysis. Justin is currently undergoing chemotherapy for 49 weeks and since the time he was admitted into hospital, he has not been able to eat. He receives all his nutrients via intravenous. Doctor’s told Tracy that Justin may be in hospital for the next year.

During this time, Tracy plans to be with Justin all the time. In fact, when chemotherapy caused Justin to lose his hair, Tracy decided to shave her head and donate her hair to the cancer society.

Justin is a typical five-year-old, he loves Sponge Bob Square Pants and video games, he enjoys sports and he is a huge fan of actor Will Smith. He also loves sharks and his dream is to go to the Bahamas and visit the Atlantis hotel to see the Shark Walk.

Justin is currently battling an aggressive cancer, and each day is different. This past Christmas a new lump was discovered on Justin arm. While doctors run further tests, Justin and Tracy remain optimistic and plan to take each day at a time. They find comfort in the staff at SickKids, who have made the pair feel like part of the hospital family.
