Selecting a Realtor

In today's marketplace, hiring an agent to represent your best interests is an essential step towards achieving your real estate goals.  A serious buyer will have expectations of their realtor, and rightly so...Purchasing a home is a major investment.  Hiring the right professional to promote your best interests can save you time and money during the process.  In fact, many of us know of a friend or family member who has a "real estate story" minus a happy ending.  Here are a few tips to ensure you make the right choice.

• Interview your prospective Realtor and discuss past performance, experience, education, other achievements and areas of specialization.
• Ensure your Realtor's skills in the above areas meet your expectations and match your needs.
• Discuss Agency Law in Real Estate and how this applies to the relationship you will have with your Realtor.  It's best to discuss your expectations at the beginning of the relationship to avoid disappointment.
• Expect/Request a written commitment from your Realtor.  More and more Realtors are working together with their buyers in a legal capacity as a "Buyer Agent".  This mutual commitment is beneficial for both the buyer and the Realtor.
• Request references and a written service guarantee to protect yourself from and insincere or inexperienced Realtor.
